US to open consulate in Kandahar: Envoy

Fri Feb 25, 2011

US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry has announced that the US will be opening a consulate in the war-torn Afghan province of Kandahar.

During a visit to the Kandahar city and in a meeting with the provincial officials there, General Eikenberry said that he would do his best to prepare the grounds for opening a US consulate in Kandahar.

Eikenberry noted that opening of US consulate in Kandahar would help the growth of trade ties between Kabul and Washington.

The US opened its consulate in the city of Herat in western Afghanistan last year.

Some analysts are of the opinion that opening consulates in Afghan cities will raise concerns in a number of regional countries.

Civilian casualties have been a frequent source of tension between Kabul and the US-led foreign forces.

The United Nations says the death toll of Afghan civilians in 2010 was 20 percent higher than in 2009, with over 2,400 civilians killed in the country from January to September.
