No end in sight to protests in Bahrain

Mass protests in Bahrain have shown no sign of a decline after nearly two weeks as protesters are demanding the ouster of the ruling regime and parliamentarians to resign.

Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters marched out of Pearl Square in Manama on Monday towards Bahrain's appointed chamber of parliament, Reuters reported.

They gathered outside the parliament building, demanding that all deputies resign over the government's use of deadly force against protesters.

Seven people were killed and hundreds were wounded earlier this month in clashes with the Bahraini security forces.

“We came to this parliament to say that you represent the people and you represent us -- take an honorable position over the killings by the army,” said Mirza al-Shihabi, one of the protesters outside the parliament building in central Manama.

The protesters are demanding constitutional reforms, King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa's abdication, the resignation of the long-serving Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa and the cancellation of a 40-member consultative council appointed by the king.

Meanwhile, Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa says efforts have been made to negotiate with the opposition.

A group of Bahraini lawmakers have resigned over the government's brutal crackdown on popular protests.
