The office of an independent television channel in the Iraqi city of Sulaymanieh has been torched after broadcasting live footage of protests against the Kurdish government.
At least 50 masked gunmen in military uniforms attacked the Nalia Radio and Television channel station shortly after midnight on Sunday.
The gunmen completely burned the building and injured two security guards and two staff members, a Press TV correspondent reported on Monday.
They broke into the three-story building and attacked the facility, shooting at the essential broadcast equipment and ultimately burning down the building with all its studios and other equipment.
The channel started launching programs on February 17, broadcasting the deadly confrontation between Kurdish security forces and the demonstrators on the first day of recent protest rallies in Kurdistan.
The satellite TV station had formerly received threats over the coverage of anti-government protests, including several phone calls on the evening of the attack.
Nalia general manager Twana Osman told Press TV that it would cost around USD 2.7 million to repair the station, but stressed that the channel plans to be back on air as soon as possible.
He said the “attack is not only against the TV station, but it is a crime against the general public of Kurdistan.”
He said this is “a dangerous attempt to hide the truth and obstruct and intimidate independent media.”
Hundreds of people took to the streets against the Sulaymanieh headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) of regional president Massoud Barzani on Thursday.
Security guards fired into the air, killing two young men and wounding 54 others.
During the protests, police beat two journalists, among them a Press TV cameraman.
