Azeri authorities have heightened security in the Republic of Azerbaijan amid mounting concerns about a possible spillover of regional uprisings into the nation.
Security is tight in the former Soviet republic following reports that the country's youth activists have begun a Facebook campaign, calling for nationwide protests against the government on March 11 and 12, dubbed as "the great people's day."
The government is sending dozens of military units to the capital Baku ahead of the planned rallies, local newspaper reports indicate.
The Azeri parliament earlier expressed support for the demonstrations. It has called for the resignation of the cabinet, major political reforms and the release of all political prisoners.
The organizers of the campaign are calling on people to show their approval of the initiative and to gather in different towns and cities across Azerbaijan.
According to reports, more than 20,000 Internet users have been informed of the initiative and a few thousand have joined the online campaign.
