At least eight people have been injured after a group of government supporters attacked a pro-democracy protest rally in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
About 2,000 pro-democracy protesters demanding political reforms were holding their peaceful weekly demonstration in the capital when they came under attack from pro-government activists armed with batons, pipes and stones.
According to medical sources those injured, all pro-democracy protesters, suffered fractures to the skull, arms or legs. A journalist and his son are among the injured.
Police blamed the violence on the fact that both government supporters and pro-democracy protesters staged rallies near one another at the same time in Amman.
"A quarrel broke out between pro-government rally and another demonstration staged in the same location," said police spokesman Mohamed Khatib.
The pro-democracy protesters, however, say that they were dispersing when government supporters started to chase and hit them.
"Police didn't do anything to protect us," he said. "Police forces just stood on the side watching us getting beaten," a protester said.
Elsewhere in the capital, about 30 university students gathered in front of the royal palace, calling for constitutional reforms and limits on King Abdullah II authority.
King Abdullah dismissed his Cabinet earlier this month after weeks of massive street protests against the government's economic and political policies.
Jordan's new Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit has promised to follow instructions given by the king and carry out "real economic and political reforms," including amending the election law.
Pro-democracy protesters in Jordan demand that prime minister be democratically elected rather than being appointed by the King.
