The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the barbaric and deadly blast which targeted a church in Alexandria, stressing vehemently their deep indignation of this heinous and serious crime. The MB called for the immediate investigation and punishment of all responsible.

In an official statement, the popular group stressed that Islam does not tolerate such barbaric actions, confirming that the attack acts against all that it stands for, highlighting that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance which preserves the sanctity of human life regardless of religion, creed or color.

The group emphasizes that such actions target not only Christians but all Egyptians who have co-existed in harmony for years. It slammed such measures by terrorists who threatened the stability of a country which is renowned for its unity.

The MB ended its statements, extending its condolences to the families of all the victims, Muslims and Christians, who were killed and injured in the blasts and expressed its solidarity with the victims.

MB Chairman Calls for Nation's Unity against Sudan Partition

Dr. Mohammed Badie, Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), affirmed that the unity of the Arab/Islamic nation has become the first bulwark against US-Zionist schemes afoot to divide Sudan, and the rest of the Arab world.

Sunday, January 2, 2011

Dr. Mohammed Badie, Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), affirmed that the unity of the Arab/Islamic nation has become the first bulwark against US-Zionist schemes afoot to divide Sudan, and the rest of the Arab world.

In his weekly message entitled: "The fragmentation of Sudan and the Nation's unity," he stressed that "the Islamic nation has lost hope in their leaders, who willingly or unwillingly succumbed to US-Zionist schemes, and followed their footsteps. People have lost their glory and dignity and felt offended when rulers voluntarily gave up their control to their enemy.

The MB chairman added: "People are the cornerstone in the edifice of the state, and their youth are loyal soldiers at times of woes and wars, despite desperate attempts to obliterate their identity, and prevent them from performing their assigned role, while putting a siege to their ideas and preventing them from expressing their will freely."

"Signing the Arab joint defense agreement is now binding to guarantee the safety of the Arabs, enhance security and deter or defeat aggression," he explained, noting that the Convention is ineffective because the common defense and protection of the homeland from external threats are not in the priorities of the autocratic Arab regimes, whose top priorities are to retain their power and position, use violence against their own people and maintain so-called stability."

"The Arab armies have become lion's cages that cannot find an enemy to fight because he does not know the identity of his real enemy and the Arabs are not against the Zionists and the United States, and there is no political will to revive the joint Arab defense agreement. Accordingly, we do not hear about a meeting of Arab defense ministers since it was signed, while meetings of the Arab information and interior ministers are periodically repeated as they convene to oppress the innocent."

The techniques of deception, forgery, fraud and deceit are widely practiced and are still practiced by Arab regimes and this has been exposed. People take steps toward regaining their usurped rights, pride and dignity. Desperate defense of land in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine proves that the Arab/Islamic peoples are awakening and people's will is stronger than all the plots hatched against them. Free people are defending their dignity, willing to live a decent life, and insisting on regaining their rights and their freedom.

Somali pirates seize Algerian flagged ship with 27 crew

NAIROBI, Jan. 2 (Xinhua)--Somali pirates have hijacked Algerian flagged and owned ship in the Indian Ocean with 27 crew members, European Union anti-piracy taskforce said on Sunday.

EU Naval Force spokesman Paddy O'Kennedy said MV Blinda was seized by pirates on Saturday afternoon, approximately 150 nautical miles South East of the port of Salalah, Oman. "MV Blida has a crew of 27 (Algerian, Ukrainian and Philippino) and is carrying a cargo of Clinker," O'Kennedy said in a statement on Sunday.

The 20,586 tonne Bulk Carrier was on her way to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from Salalah in Oman at the time of the attack. "No further details of the attack are known at this stage," he said, adding that the vessel was registered with MSC (HOA) but had not reported to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

There are now 28 vessels and 654 hostages being held by pirates off the coast of Somalia.

The pirates have intensified their action in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden and most of hijackings end without casualties when a ransom has been paid, but often after several months of negotiations.

The Gulf of Aden, a body of water between Somalia and Yemen, is the main sea route between Europe and Asia. Tankers carrying Middle East oil through the Suez Canal must pass first through the Gulf of Aden.

About four per cent of the world's daily oil supply is shipped through the gulf.

The attacks are being carried out by increasingly well- coordinated Somali gangs armed with automatic weapons and rocket- propelled grenades, maritime officials said.

The Horn of Africa nation has been without a functioning government since 1991, and remains one of the world's most violent and lawless countries.

Combined Task Force 150, a naval alliance dominated by the United States and based in the Gulf of Aden nation of Djibouti, is patrolling an area within the Gulf of Aden to help protect ships from pirates.

Spain enacts tough anti-smoking law

By HAROLD HECKLE, Associated Press

MADRID – Tapas bars — the noisy and bustling Spanish success story that combined delicious morsels with good wine and often a cloud of cigarette smoke — are now smoke-free. So are restaurants, discos, casinos, airports and even some outdoor spaces.

Spain on Sunday introduced an anti-smoking law that is likely to turn the EU's fourth largest tobacco producer from a cigarette-friendly land abounding with smoky bars and restaurants, into one of Europe's most stringently smokeless.

The law prohibits lighting up in enclosed public places, although hotels are allowed to reserve 30 percent of their rooms for smokers. In a particularly tough measure, outside smoking is banned in open-air children's playgrounds — even those inside parks — and at access points to schools and hospitals.

"It's a step that should have been taken four years ago, but I think the government got cold feet," said bakery worker Inma Amantes Ramos, 29.

Parliament approved an anti-smoking law in 2006 that prohibited smoking in the workplace but allowed bar and restaurant owners with premises under 100 square meters (1,100 square feet) to decide whether to allow smoking or not — and almost all permitted it.

Critics called the law a failure. Health Minister Leire Pajin said around 50,000 people died each year in Spain as a result of smoking-related illnesses, with around 1,200 of those being nonsmokers who inhaled secondhand smoke.

Larger restaurants were allowed to build hermetically sealed smoking sections, but now those spaces can no longer be used for smoking — a revolution for Spaniards used to wining, dining and lighting up.

The law stipulates that a minor infringement should be penalized with fines from euro30 ($40) to euro600 ($800) while very serious breaches will attract fines from euro10,001 ($13,000) to euro600,000 ($800,000).

But the penalties are unlikely to deter many Spaniards who consider smoking in restaurants a virtual right.

"I don't like bans," said travel agent Marcos Yubero, 49, who admitted he had just sneaked a quick smoke in a bar men's room in downtown Madrid. "People should be allowed to choose for themselves how they behave and frankly after a couple of drinks most people I know reach for their cigarette packs without thinking."

Spain's main restaurant and bar federation predicted the law will lead to 145,000 lost jobs and a 10 percent decline in revenue for the sector, but the Health Ministry said similar laws put in place in recent years in nations ranging from Britain to France and Italy did not hurt business badly.

The law does allow for private smoking clubs that bar children and require registration — but they can't let people eat, drink or buy cigarettes on the premises.

Spain's National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking says up to 1,000 waiters die yearly from lung ailments, mainly from breathing secondhand smoke.

By 2012 all of the EU's 27 member states should have banned smoking in enclosed areas.

Asian humanitarian convoy for Gaza expected to arrive in Egypt

Sun, 02 Jan 2011

Cairo - A ship carrying humanitarian supplies for the Gaza Strip as part of an Asian aid mission is expected to dock in the Egyptian port of Al-Arish on Sunday.

The vessel, Salam, began its journey in India as part of the "Asia2Gaza Caravan" campaign.

It is carrying four ambulances, eight school buses, and food and medical supplies for people living in the Palestinian territory that is subject to an Israeli embargo.

Around 120 activists involved in the mission flew out of Damascus on a plane bound for Al-Arish Sunday. Eight fellow activists were already on board the ship.

Last month, Egyptian authorities granted visas to most of the activists. However, it refused entry to seven Iranians and other activists and journalists from different nationalities who were on board.

Egypt's approval is required to reach the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing, particularly since Israel tightened its blockade after Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007.

Five Maoist rebels killed by government forces in India

Sun, 02 Jan 2011

New Delhi - At least five Maoist militants were killed in combat by government forces in India's eastern state of Orissa on Sunday, a news report said.

Police teams raided a rebel hideout in a forested area of the Jajpur district some 100 kilometers north-east of state capital Bhubaneshwar Saturday night, the IANS news agency reported.

Senior police official Sanjeev Marik said five rebels including three women were killed, the report said.

A cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the hideout.

More than one-third of India's 626 administrative districts are affected by the insurgency, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described as the main internal security threat.

The rebels claim they are fighting for the rights of tribal, landless and poor people in some of the country's poorest regions.

At least 1,174 rebels, troops and civilians were killed in incidents related to the insurgency in 2010, making it one of the deadliest years in the four-decade old rebellion in India.

Protesters arrested outside US ambassador's residence in Israel

Sun, 02 Jan 2011

Tel Aviv - Israeli police early Sunday arrested 11 pro- Palestinian activists taking part in a protest outside the home of US Ambassador James Cunningham north of Tel Aviv.

The activists were protesting against the death of a Palestinian woman who had participated in a demonstration against Israel's West Bank security barrier on Friday.

Jawaher Abu-Rahma died in a Ramallah hospital Saturday, after inhaling tear gas during the protest in the village of Bil'in, north- west of Jerusalem. She was reportedly in her mid-30s.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Sunday's protest was a disturbance of the peace and the activists threw an empty teargas canister and a chain toward the ambassador's residence.

Cunningham's residence is in the affluent town of Herzliyyah, north of Tel Aviv while the US embassy is in the city.

Almost two years ago, Abu-Rahma's brother, Bassam, was killed during a protest in Bil'in, about four kilometers from the Israel- West Bank border. Another brother, Ashraf, was shot and wounded during a demonstration, also against the barrier in the village of Na'alin.

Every Friday, local Palestinians and left-wing Israeli and foreign activists protest against the barrier, which cuts off land from Bil'in and several other villages.

The Israeli army charges that the protests are violent and the activists hurl stones at security forces and often try to damage the security fence.

The protesters accuse the Israeli military of acting heavy- handedly against them.

The military has released photographs of Palestinians using slingshots to hurl rocks at the security forces, which it alleged proved the Bil'in protest was violent.

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists also demonstrated late Saturday outside the Israeli Defence Ministry in Tel Aviv against Abu-Rahma's death. Eight protesters were arrested.

Israel began building its controversial security barrier in 2002, following a spate of suicide bombings in its cities. Palestinians however say the barrier is part of an Israeli "land grab", since in places it snakes deep into the West Bank to include scores of settlements.

Egypt tightens security around churches after bombing

Sun, 02 Jan 2011

Cairo - Authorities in Egypt imposed tight security around churches across the country Sunday, in the wake of a suicide bombing outside a church in Alexandria that 21 people and injured nearly 100.

The Interior Ministry deployed more heavily-armed police and undercover agents. Checkpoints were set up outside all provinces and cars were being prevented from parking near churches.

State media reported that hundreds of suspects were detained in the south of the country, without giving further details.

Shortly after midnight Friday, a suicide bomber detonated his nail-packed bomb outside the Coptic Christian Church of the Saints in the northern city of Alexandria where hundreds were attending a New Year's Eve service.

Twenty-one people were killed and 97 injured in the blast, according to the latest figures from the Health Ministry.

Education Minister Ahmed Zaki Badr instructed schools and universities to hold a minute's silence for the victims on Sunday.

School teachers were told to talk about national unity and convey the government's stance that church bombing was "a terrorist attack and not sectarian".

On Saturday, the government stressed that "foreign elements" were behind the attack, saying the country rather than its Christian minority was targeted.

Christians account for around 10 per cent of the population. Copts are preparing to celebrate their Christmas.

Fire damage to historic German church altar irreparable

Sun, 02 Jan 2011

Aachen, Germany - Damage caused to an historic German church altar, which caught fire after probably being hit by a stray firework, appears to be irreparable, an official said Sunday in the western city of Aachen.

Paintings dating back to the 17th century and four medieval stained-glass windows were wrecked in the blaze early Saturday.

Dieter Spoo, a lay official of the Catholic Diocese of Aachen, estimated the cost of the damage at 300,000 euros (400,000 dollars).

He said the wooden back of the 8-meter-high baroque altar was completely destroyed along with a painting on the front side of Christ's crucifixion and four wooden statues flanking the 1630 altar.

"I don't believe it can be restored," said Spoo.

Police suspect careless New Year revelers fired a firework sideways into the Gothic church, which was built in 1327.

The altar paintings are attributed to the school of Flemish old master Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640).

The altar had been the dominant feature of the Nikolaus Kirche in the inner city of Aachen near the Dutch border. The church is jointly used by Catholic and Lutheran congregations.

Media law overshadows Hungary's EU presidency

Sat, 01 Jan 2011

Budapest - Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union on Saturday amid continuing concern about a controversial new media law.

The government said "misunderstandings" had led to international criticism of the legislation, which empowers a government body to monitor media and to levy fines for printing or broadcasting matter that violates its guidelines, which, so far, are not clearly defined.

The EU presidency would help clear up those misunderstandings, government spokeswoman Anna Nagy was quoted as saying by the Hungarian news agency MTI.

She said opponents of the law had based their criticism on incomplete information about the measures.

The law came into effect on Saturday and the new monitoring commission immediately launched an investigation into a private radio station for playing a song by the US rapper Ice-T which the panel deemed to be harmful to young people.

It was not immediately if or how the broadcaster, Tilos Radio, would be punished.

On Friday, far-right and liberal-green opposition parties joined forces with the opposition Socialists in planning to appeal the media law.

The fines allowed under the law are high enough to bankrupt many media companies, critics say.

Along with the Socialists, the far-right Jobbik and the liberal- Green LMP are now also calling for Hungary's constitutional court to review the law.

Jobbik is objecting to the measure because, among other things, the new commission is dominated by members of the ruling Fidesz party.

Yemen slams US 'interference' over constitution changes - Summary

Sat, 01 Jan 2011

Sana'a, Yemen - Yemen's ruling General People's Congress (GPC) party on Saturday lambasted as "interference in internal affairs" a US State Department statement urging Sana'a to postpone constitutional amendments.

The Yemeni parliament has begun debating amendments to the country's constitution which would cancel the current two-term limit on the country's presidency, state news agency Saba reported.

The House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament, had agreed in principle to debate the constitutional amendments but referred it to a sub-committee for further study.

Also among the proposed changes is one to reduce the president's term of office from seven to five years, parliamentary sources told the German Press Agency dpa.

On Saturday, around 2,000 opposition activists protested outside the parliament's compound in Sana'a against the amendments.

They carried placards reading: "The constitutional amendments are a retreat from the republican regime and democracy" and "No to re- election, no to inheritance of power."

President Ali Abdullah Saleh, 68, has been at the helm of Yemen since 1978. He was elected for the first time through direct universal suffrage in 1999, and re-elected for a second seven-year term in 2006. His current tenure ends in 2013.

In a statement on Friday, the US State Department spokesman Mark C Toner urged the Yemeni government and the opposition to resume dialogue on electoral reforms.

"We urgently call on all parties to delay parliamentary action and to return to the negotiating table to reach an agreement that will be welcomed by the Yemeni people as well as Yemen's friends," Toner said.

The debate on the constitutional changes began a few days after President Saleh said his government would forge ahead with preparations for parliamentary elections next year amid speculation of a boycott by opposition parties.

Yemen's main opposition parties, grouped under the umbrella of the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP), had warned that the ongoing election preparations would only produce a rigged vote and threatened to boycott the poll.

The legislative elections were originally scheduled for April 2009, but the JMP and GPC agreed in February 2009 to postpone the vote for two years in order to provide time for a national dialogue on electoral reforms.

Both sides have since been trading accusations of obstructing the dialogue.

"We continue to believe that the interests of the Yemeni people will be best served through that process of negotiations," the US official said.

The ruling GPC party then denounced the state department's call for postponing the debate on constitutional amendments as an "interference in the internal affairs of peoples and an infringe on national sovereignty as the parliament in any country represents the will of the people and their choices."

It said the US call "lacks discretion and is not up to the level of responsibility and diplomatic norms."

The planned constitutional changes were "legal and constitutional procedures that stem from the will of the people and its higher interests and not according to the wishes or whims of foreign parties," the GPC said in its statement.

JMP parties have frequently called for reforming the electoral system before any poll can be held.

The JMP includes the main opposition party Islah and the Yemeni Socialist Party, as well as four other smaller opposition parties.

Thousands cheer start of 2011 Dakar Rally in Buenos Aires

Sat, 01 Jan 2011

Buenos Aires - A crowd of several thousand gathered Saturday in central Buenos Aires to cheer on participants at the start of the 2011 edition of the prestigious Dakar Rally.

The offroad race is to take place in Argentina and Chile for the third consecutive year, after security problems drove it out of its original location in Africa.

A total of 407 drivers took part in the first stage, 377 kilometers between Buenos Aires and Victoria, in the Argentine province of Entre Rios. There was however no special in this stage, and timing of participants was to start Sunday with a 222-kilometers stretch between Victoria and Argentina's second-largest city, Cordoba.

Organizers were thrilled with crowd support, a key aspect to keep the Dakar Rally in South America in recent years.

"Contenders (surely) cannot remain untouched by this collective declaration of love for them and what they are undertaking," the rally said on its website.

The Dakar Rally, with more than 9,500 kilometers including 5,000 kilometers of specials, is to end January 15 also in the Argentine capital, where winners are to be celebrated a day later.

This edition, like its predecessors, will feature key stages in northern Chile's challenging Atacama Desert.

Spain's Carlos Sainz and France's Cyril Despres are to defend their 2010 titles in the car and motorbike categories, with Volkswagen seeking a third consecutive win in cars and KTM aiming to consolidate a domination on two wheels that stretches back to 2001.

Earthquake tremors felt in northern West Bank

NABLUS (Ma'an) -- An earthquake centered in northern Israel sent tremors through the northern West Bank on Saturday.

Jalal Dbeik, Director of the Center for Earth Science and Engineering at the University of An-Najah, said the earthquake registered at 3.6 degrees on the Richter scale.

It was felt in Jenin and Nablus, as well as northern Israel and Jordan, but no injuries were reported.

The quake was the fourth in two months, but others had registered at between 1-2 degrees on the Richter scale and went unnoticed by residents, he said.

The area of Beit She'an, where the quake centered, is on an active rift and is prone to earthquakes, Dbeik said.

The last earthquake in the region centered in the upper Galilee at the end of November and registered at 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale.
