New York - A United Nations team investigating the assassination of Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto in 2007 has requested three more months to complete the work, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday. "They need more time to continue their investigation," Ban said. "I think this is reasonable and I'm positively considering to extend it for another three months."
The three-member team, headed by Chile's UN Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, began the investigation in July. Bhutto was killed in December, 2007, while campaigning as a presidential candidate.
The team's mandate did not call for it to identify the killers, however. Its findings would help the Pakistani government to find them.
