Washington - Three detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison facility for holding suspects in the war on terrorism were transferred to Georgia on Tuesday, the US Justice Department confirmed.
The transfer is part of President Barack Obama's plan to close the controversial facility at the US naval installation on Cuba, and reduces the number of detainees at the prison to 185.
"The United States is grateful to Georgia for its willingness to support US efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility," the Justice Department said.
Obama missed a January deadline to close Guantanamo, struggling to find countries willing to take larger numbers of the inmates and with how to try those who can be prosecuted.
