Bulgarian ruling coalition fails to impeach President Parvanov

Sofia - The conservative coalition grouped behind Prime Minister Boyko Borisov on Wednesday failed to muster enough votes in parliament to impeach the Socialist President Georgi Parvanov.

The impeachment petition required the support of 161 of the 240 legislators, but was backed by only 155 deputies, with 72 voting against. Thirteen deputies were absent.

Borisov's coalition moved to impeach Parvanov claiming that he violated the nation's constitution during his public feud with the Finance Minister Simeon Djankov.

The row between the minister and the president broke out last month when Djankov commented on Parvanov's reputed wealth in a television talk show.

The two later met to discuss the incident, but Parvanov then released the transcripts from their meeting without authorization. Borisov's camp said that Paravanov violated the law and Djankov's privacy by publicizing their confidential conversation.

Borisov's GARB party swept the Socialist-led coalition from power in July elections, promising to rid the country of corruption.

Parvanov's second and final five-year term expires next year.
