Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei - Brunei's 388,000 people waste about 100 million liters of water each day, media reports said Tuesday.
Abu Hanipah Hj Talip, director of the Water Services Department, gave the figure as World Water Day was marked Monday. He added that the tiny country on Borneo Island has the highest per-capita water consumption in South-East Asia.
Abu Hanipah said Brunei's water usage is 420 liters of water per person per day, compared with Singapore's 150 liters.
The difference has been attributed to Brunei's high subsidies for water, which puts the price of its water for domestic use at about 8 US cents per cubic meter for the first 54 cubic meters and 31 cents for every cubic meter after that.
Brunei is a rich oil nation whose citizens receive benefits that include no taxes, free health care and education, high unemployment benefits and cheap utility bills.
