EDINBURGH, Scotland, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Construction has started on what is expected to be the largest biomass power plant in Scotland, the British subsidiary of German energy company RWE announced.
The company said work started on a biomass combined heat and power plant associated with paper processing facilities in Scotland.
Paper manufacturers in the region currently are getting their power from outdated coal-fired plants, which RWE said was unsustainable for "both environmental and economic reasons."
The plant, the company said, will be the biggest of its kind in the region, generating some 50 megawatts of electricity and more than 120 tons of industrial steam every hour.
The company said the plant would run on green wood and other wood residues from sustainable forestry. This, the company said in a statement, could prevent around 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere every year.
The company said it would invest about $300 million in building the plant, which should take around two years.
The project will be supported with more than $11 million in sponsorship money from the Scottish government.
