Algerian activists seek to criminalize gender-based violence

2010-11-24

To mark the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 15 women's rights NGOs will gather in Algiers on Thursday (November 25th) to plead for the adoption of domestic violence legislation, APS reported. The Algerian Family Planning Association is hosting the conference, which kicks off a national campaign aimed at garnering support for laws criminalizing violence against women. Delegations from Spain, Tunisia, France and Italy are expected to attend the event.

Last Saturday, United Nations Special Rapporteur Rashida Manjoo concluded a visit to Algeria to assess progress in stemming violence against women. Algeria invited the UN official to evaluate the country's implementation of UN recommendations.
