Tehran - An Iranian university professor was killed Tuesday by a bomb near his home in a north Tehran district, the English-language network Press TV reported. It identified the victim as Massoud Mohammadi and said he was killed by a booby-trapped motorbike.
The report gave no further details on the killed professor or the possible motive behind the killing.
There were unconfirmed reports by websites that the 50-year-old professor was a nuclear physicist, but it was not clear whether he also had a role in the country's controversial nuclear programs.
Iranian officials termed the bombing a terrorist act and linked it to "mercenaries of world powers," apparently a reference to the militant opposition group People's Mujaheddin of Iran.
Police were investigating the crime scene in Qaytarieh district.
