Bahrain re-arrests terror suspect

Wed, 13 Jan 2010

Manama, Bahrain - A Bahraini terror suspect who served a one-year term on terrorism-related charges, was re-arrested by Bahraini authorities earlier this week, a civil liberties official said Wednesday. Adel Saleh, 28, was seized by security forces at a mosque in the capital Manama on Monday, after performing noon prayers, the head of civil liberties committee at the National Justice Movement (NJM), Mohammed Janahi, told the German Press Agency dpa.

"He was literally kidnapped and the authorities denied detaining him until late Tuesday night when they called his brother back and admitted that they had arrested him as a result of mounting public pressure demanding to know his whereabouts," Janahi told dpa.

"It is not clear what charges they are holding him on. He has not seen a lawyer and his family were not allowed to visit," he said.

Janahi said the security forces had informed the brother that Saleh "was expected to be released over the next couple of days after they complete their investigation."

Saleh was initially detained in June 2008 at Bahrain International Airport as he was heading to India to receive medical treatment. He was charged along with another Bahrainis of "funding a terrorist group" and "receiving military training."

The foreign terrorist group was never named, but it was believed to be in reference to Al-Qaeda.
