Portuguese president leaves Prague by car

Prague - Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, who was stranded in Prague because of the volcanic ash that closed European skies, headed home by car on Saturday, his spokesman said.

Silva left at 2 pm (1200 GMT) for Strasbourg, where he planned to stay overnight before continuing by road to Barcelona on Sunday and flying from there in a Portuguese military plane to Lisbon, spokesman Jose Carlos Vieira told the German Press Agency dpa.

The president, who originally planned to end his three-day visit on Friday, was forced to extend his stay because Czech airspace was closed to air traffic owing to ash spewed by an Icelandic volcano.

Silva was accompanied to the Czech capital by a 100-strong delegation, which followed his car in three buses, the spokesman added.
