Jakarta - Dozens of people were injured Wednesday when residents opposed to the demolition of the revered tomb of an Islamic sage clashed with police in the Indonesian capital, hospital staff and news reports said.
Television footage showed the badly injured being treated at a hospital after the fighting in North Jakarta's Koja area.
A hospital official said dozens of people were wounded but did not confirm a report on Metro TV that three people were killed.
Police could not be reached immediately.
Local media said police beat up protesters with batons, triggering a violent response from the angry crowd.
The residents were protesting against plans by the Jakarta administration to demolish the tomb of an Islamic holy man known locally as Mbak Priok to make way for a canal and freight terminal.
