Madrid - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose country took over the rotating European Union presidency on January 1, will create a group of veteran experts to advise him on how to lift the EU out of its economic crisis, the daily El Pais reported Monday. The "group of wise persons," whose members include former European Commission president Jacques Delors and former Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez, was to hold its first meeting in Madrid on Tuesday.
Delors presided over the European Commission between 1985 and 1995. Gonzalez, who was Spanish prime minister from 1982 to 1996, heads a think tank on Europe's future.
The other members of Zapatero's group were to include former European economic affairs commissioner Pedro Solbes and Spanish Economy Minister Elena Salgado, El Pais said.
Zapatero was expected to seek advice on common policies in industry, innovation, energy, agriculture, on a reform of the financial monitoring system, and on improving the exchange of tax information, according to the daily.
