Beijing - A bridge under construction at the new airport in Kunming in southern China collapsed Monday, killing seven construction workers, the official Xinhua news agency said. Thirty-four people were injured, eight of them severely.
The cause of the accident, which saw the collapse of a 38-meter section of a 13-meter-wide flyover, was not yet known.
The new airport, whose construction costs were estimated at 23 billion yuan (3.37 billion dollars), was scheduled for completion in 2011 in the capital of Yunnan province. It is to have a capacity of 38 million passengers per year.
