The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief claims that Iran wants to gain more prestige and recognition in the region by pursuing its nuclear program.
"They believe that the nuclear know-how brings prestige, brings power, and they would like to see the US engaging them," Reuters quoted IAEA Secretary-General Mohamed ElBaradei as saying on Wednesday.
"Unfortunately that holds some truth. Iran has been taken seriously since they have developed their program," he added, saying Iran's nuclear program was a "means to an end".
ElBaradei said Tehran "wants to be recognized as a regional power."
He stressed that "no concrete evidence" has been found to indicate that Tehran is trying to develop nuclear weapons as Western countries suspect.
