Tehran - A strong earthquake shook the south-eastern Iranian province of Kerman on Wednesday night, sending people running onto the streets in panic, state media reported.
There were no immediate details of casualties or the extent of damage from the 6.5-magnitude earthquake, local officials told Fars news agency, adding that the epicenter was in the town of Hossein Abad.
The head of the Iranian emergency organization, however, told Fars that according to his information, 80 per cent of the quake-hit areas have already been inspected and so far there were no casualties or injuries reported.
The interior ministry had not yet confirmed the Fars report.
The same province was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2003, which killed more than 30,000 people in the city of Bam and nearby villages.
