Six members of a family have lost their lives in flash floods that hit southwestern Saudi Arabia as heavy rains continue to plague the kingdom.
A man, his wife and their four children were killed on Thursday when flash floods swept their car away in a valley in the Assir region, near the Red Sea, Saudi media reported on Friday.
A young man was killed and another injured in the same place when they were hit by a lightning bolt, while two others were reported missing.
Civil defense workers responded to 300 calls for aid in the region, many of which from people trapped in their vehicles by flash floods, al-Watan daily quoted Civil Defense Chief Gen. Abdelwahed Thoubaiti as saying.
A highway running from the southwestern town of Najran to Taef, near the holy city of Mecca, was cut at one point by floodwaters reaching five meters (16 feet), the general said.
Heavy rains also inflicted serious property damage in the eastern region of Dahran; however, there were no reports of casualties.
