Mauritania may close migrant detention center

2010-02-19

A Mauritanian detention center for Europe-bound harragas "must be closed", Journal Tahalil quoted the head of a European Parliament mission as saying at a Nouakchott press conference on Thursday (February 18th). Pier Antonio Panzeri, who led a delegation to Mauritania following the resumption of relations with the EU, said the closure of the Nouadhibou facility "will have a symbolic role". The number of migrants serviced by the center fell from 4,400 in 2006 to about 1,200 in 2009 and 72 so far this year, he noted. The facility was established in 2006 by the Mauritanian authorities with the help of Spain.

Addressing the results of the delegation's visit, Panzeri said the trip aimed to "revive relations between the Mauritanian and European parliaments". Talks with Mauritanian officials focused on strengthening democratic institutions in Mauritania and the promotion of inclusive political dialogue, he added.
