ALGIERS - The physicians specializing in hospitals in Algeria began on Monday an indefinite strike, widely followed by the strikers, for improving their situation and against the civil service requiring them to practice in remote areas.
According to Dr. Bekkat Barkani, president of the College of Physicians of which those physicians specializing, the movement was largely followed in the country, particularly in the main hospital in Algiers, Mustapha Hospital.
The coordinator at the national level, Dr. Amin Benhabib, told AFP that "more than 90% of medical residents followed the movement today."
"The major problem is the civil service which has never solved the problem of people inside the country," told AFP one of the strikers, Sofiane urologist, at Maillot Hospital in the district of Bab el-Oued.
"There is no equipment on site. The civil service did not solve anything because we have to send patients elsewhere in the country," he adds. "What for is it to send a physician without the amenities in remote areas?" He asked.
Of about 600 doctors in specialization in this hospital account all are on strike, he said.
