New Delhi - At least six soldiers were killed when an avalanche struck in India-administered Kashmir Monday, according to news reports. Over 400 people were missing, news channel NDTV said, quoting a military source. Around 70 people had been recovered from the snow including 10 seriously injured soldiers, the report said.
"A massive avalanche rolled down in the Khilanmarg mountain, engulfing a high altitude warfare camp set up by the army there," a defence official told the IANS news agency.
The training camp was erected by the mountain troops on Sunday. At the time of the event it was host to 300 recruits, 100 trainers, 60 military support staff and 50 civilians. Army and police personnel were to lend their assistance to the rescue operation.
