Sydney - Imports from Japan, South Korea and now Thailand have overtaken sales of Australian-made cars, figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries released Sunday showed. The three local carmakers - Toyota Motor Corp, GM Holden Ltd and the Ford Motor Co - have seen their share of the local market fall over the last 10 years from 44 per cent to below 20 per cent.
Figures for January show local offerings making just 9,741 sales against 26,311 for Japanese imports, 13,130 for South Korean imports and 10,777 for Thai imports.
Products from Germany took fifth place, with 6,066 vehicles sold - a 78-per-cent increase on the figure for January 2009. The hike was down to the popularity of the Golf, which last month was named Car of the Year.
