Geneva - The United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for support to the government of Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. The 47-member body called for integrating a "human rights approach" into the recovery process, and asked the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights to identify areas in need.
At the end of a two day special session, called for by Brazil and backed by most countries on the council, the main human rights body of the UN system said it remained concerned over the "vulnerable situation" of children, women, internally displaced persons, the elderly, persons with disabilities and wounded.
The next regular session of the council will go for just over three weeks and was set to begin on March 1 in Geneva.
