The Purple Mountain Observatory Chinese Academy of Science reported that following the fantastic total solar eclipse which occurred on July 22, 2009, an annular solar eclipse will occur on January 15, 2010. It will be the most observable annular solar eclipse in China in the last 20 years.
Wang Sichao, a researcher of the Purple Mountain Observatory said that although an annular solar eclipse is not as splendid as a total solar eclipse, it is still quite wonderful. When an annular solar eclipse occurs, the central part of the sun will become dark but the outer rim of the sun will still be bright, forming a bright ring in the sky. It is extremely beautiful.
According to calculations from astronomers, the path of this eclipse will enter China from Yunnan province, and continue through Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Henan and Shandong. Except for some parts in Heilongjiang province in northeastern China, almost all regions in China will be able to see this astronomical phenomenon. In Beijing, people will be able to see 60 percent of the sun's surface being covered.
