'Space junk' sails dangerously close to International Space Station

Washington - The International Space Station narrowly missed colliding with a speeding piece of "space junk," the US space agency NASA reported. The remains of a Russian Cosmos satellite measuring 10 centimeters in diameter flew within less than a kilometer of the space station.

NASA said there was no danger to the occupants of the station.

According to experts, the pieces of expended material from satellites and space ships can reach gunshot speeds, enabling the scrap to penetrate tank armor.
