The Taliban have claimed to have temporarily captured a district in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Kunar after killing more than a dozen Afghan forces.
Taliban fighters clashed with government forces in Marawara district on Monday night, killing more than 15 soldiers and capturing a large volume of weapons, the group's spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said.
He said the insurgents stayed in Marawara until early hours on Tuesday before they returned to their positions.
A senior local security official in Kunar, however, told Press TV that last night's attack by Taliban elements left one police officer killed and two injured.
He said three militants were killed in the conflict, adding nearly 20 others who intended to escape in a police patrol came under fire from NATO helicopters and were all killed.
The situation in Marawara is normal and there is no serious problem, he assured.
Marawara district is located a few kilometers away from provincial capital Asadabad.
