11 August 2011

In Azerbaijan, about 124 thousands of signatures have been gathered against the ban on headscarves in schools, the petition will be handed over to President Ilham Aliyev, reports Russian news agency Lenta.ru citing Contact.az.

Campaign to collect signatures was launched in early July. It was hosted by the Center for Protection of Freedom of conscience and religion (DEVAMM), report the news agency.

In 2010, the Education Ministry announced on the inadmissibility of the hijab in schools. The ban was motivated by the fact that the hijab is not mandatory item for Azerbaijani school uniforms, reports Lenta.ru.

Earlier in Baku leaflets against the ban on headscarves in schools were distributed. They showed a crossed-out portrait of the Minister of Education Misir Mardanov. Note under it read: "Everyone has the right to dress and get an education appropriate to his faith, but this right is violated."
