Iran elected OPCW deputy head

The Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has voted for the Islamic Republic of Iran as the vice-chair.

The OPCW members unanimously voted in favor of appointing Iran's ambassador to the Netherlands, permanent representative to the organization, Kazem Gharib Abadi, as its deputy head at the 60th session of the 41-member body in The Hague on Thursday.

The Executive Council of the OPCW is responsible for the implementation of directives issued by the Chemical Weapons Organization (CWC or Convention).

High up on the agenda of the OPCW is the total eradication of chemical weapons, which, according to an international convention, should be implemented by April 29th, 2012.

Since Iran has been a victim of chemical weapons, mostly mustard gas and sarin, the Iranian delegation to the organization has been one of the most active members.

Iran, Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Europe and other states, are among the members of the Executive Council of the Organization.
