Algerian opposition leader backs open border with Morocco

2010-04-21

Algerian opposition Socialist Forces Front party chief Karim Tabou renewed his call to open the land border between Algeria and Morocco, Tout sur l'Algerie reported on Tuesday (April 20th). Speaking Monday on Morocco's 2M public broadcasting network, Tabou said that the process of Maghreb integration is predicated on opening the border. "There is no problem between the peoples of Algeria and Morocco. The Algerians and the Moroccans have a happiness to be found. It was known in the past. When the borders were open, Algerians were happy to come to Morocco," Tabou said.

The land border has been closed since 1994. In 2008, Morocco began calling for the opening of its shared border with Algeria and the normalization of relations between the two nations. Algeria, meanwhile, has said that the border will remain closed until the two countries agree on a "package of deals", including a solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
