A helicopter crash has killed four Spanish soldiers in a mountainous area near Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic, a UN official says.
"The four Spanish soldiers are dead," George Ola-Davies, a spokesman for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, said on Friday.
Juan Pedro Gomez, Spanish consul general in Haiti, confirmed the casualties.
The soldiers' remains "are in the process of being recovered and will be rapidly repatriated to Spain," Gomez said.
The Spanish Defense Ministry said the helicopter was returning from the Dominican Republic with another helicopter when "they lost contact with each other due to poor visibility."
A devastating quake in January killed thousands of people and leveled part of the capital Port-au-Prince.
More than 400 Spanish military personnel are deployed in Haiti helping with earthquake relief efforts.
