(Magharebia) The wife of Tunisian journalist Taoufik Ben Brik and seven other relatives began a hunger strike aimed at obtaining his release, international press reported on Thursday (January 7th). Azza Zarrad said that the hunger strike was an attempt to draw attention to her husband's failing health and help him receive urgent medical treatment. Ben Brik, who began his own hunger strike last month, reportedly suffers from Cushing's Syndrome and needs regular access to medication.
On November 26th, Ben Brik was sentenced to six months in prison on assault charges. Human rights organizations say the charges were fabricated to silence his criticism of the government.
