Snow, ice continue to hamper transportation in France

Paris - Even though temperatures were slowly returning to normal for the season Monday, snowfall and icy road conditions continued to disrupt transportation in France. The national weather service Meteo France issued an alert for snow and ice for 18 departments, or regions, including Paris and its suburbs, for Monday.

In addition to the weather-related shutdown of the Eurostar trains linking the French capital with London, rail service between Paris and its suburbs was badly hobbled as a strike of conductors on Europe's busiest suburban train line went into its 12th day.

In addition, traffic on another Paris suburban rail line was slowed because of the derailment of a train late Sunday that slightly injured 17 people.

Snow also continue to influence air travel Monday as the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) asked airlines to cancel some 20 per cent of their scheduled flights out of Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport.

On Sunday, some 40 per cent of the scheduled flights from there were canceled.
