Snow causes traffic chaos in Spain

Madrid - A cold wave and snowfall caused traffic chaos on Monday in central Spain, especially on entry roads to the capital Madrid, which was covered with an unusual blanket of snow. Residents were advised not to use private vehicles. Snowfall forced the closure of two runways at Madrid airport, sources of the airport management company Aena said. Several flights were delayed to destinations including Lisbon and northern Europe.

Some of the high-speed trains linking Madrid with Seville, Malaga and Barcelona were unable to operate, according to sources of the rail company Renfe.

Temperatures as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius were registered in the northern city of Burgos overnight.
