Tehran - Iran shot down two Western drones which violated Iranian airspace in the Gulf, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards air force told Fars news agency Sunday.
General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh gave no details on exactly where and when the spy drones were downed. The general also claimed Iran had downed other pilotless craft in the past, but again gave no details.
Hajizadeh said Iran's forces were prepared to confront all air and naval threats by the United States.
The elite Revolutionary Guards have been on high alert along Iran's border, due to fears of air strikes against the country's nuclear sites.
Although Tehran has always insisted its army is not trained to attack another country, it has vowed a fierce response to any military aggression against its nuclear sites.
The West fears Iran is working on a secret atomic program and could eventually launch a nuclear missile strike against Israel, especially with its Shahab missiles which reportedly have a range of 2,000 kilometers, capable of reaching any part of the Jewish state.
Iran unveiled its first domestic made unmanned aerial vehicle in August last year which is reportedly able to fire explosive ammunition.
