Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged the new strongman in Tunisia Saturday to create genuine democracy.
"I urge you to use this turning point that has taken place in Tunisian history for a fresh start," she said in a message via her media spokesman to Mohamed Ghannouchi, the prime minister who has adopted presidential powers.
"Respond to the protesting people and introduce genuine democracy. It is essential to respect human rights, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly," Merkel said. "Germany and the European Union are prepared to be supportive during such a fresh start."
