Workers say technical troubles stop construction on steel barrier aimed at halting smuggling
Roee Nahmias
An Egyptian newspaper reported Friday that work on the barrier being constructed between Gaza and Sinai has been halted in some places due to technical difficulties.
Al-Masry Al-Youm says workers involved in the construction of the steel barrier confirmed the report, and said the border area's geological characteristics were hindering the work.
The workers told the paper that boulders in the ground had made it impossible to drill deeper than four meters into the ground at some spots, therefore preventing the construction teams from laying down steel plates.
They said it was the most serious problem they had encountered since construction of the underground barrier began. Last month severe floods that hit Israel's southern region also disrupted the work.
The disruptions could mean good news for Palestinians working to smuggle goods into Gaza through underground tunnels, which the barrier was meant to eradicate.
However the paper says smuggling is still in decline, despite reports by eyewitnesses who say tunnels have been dug beneath the barrier.

Allah is preventing the Egyptians from laying down the steel barrier with the Gaza border.
