Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysian octogenarian allegedly stabbed his 73-year-old wife of one year to death, after she demanded a divorce despite his efforts at reconciliation, a news report said Tuesday. The 80-year-old suspect and his wife had been separated for two months, ever since the husband refused to give in to the victim's demand for a divorce.
On Sunday, the man went to his wife's house to attempt to talk her out of her decision.
After an hour and her continued insistence on going ahead with divorce proceedings, he suddenly whipped out a 17-inch knife and stabbed her in the stomach, the Star daily said.
The woman's son, who was sitting out on the verandah with the couple, grabbed the knife from the suspect, who then attempted to escape.
The son told reporters that the suspect had shouted out that since they could not be a couple, he would rather that they "die together," before stabbing his wife.
The woman died from the injury before an ambulance arrived at the scene.
The suspect was caught by villagers and handed over to police. He is due to be remanded and charged with murder.
