The Pakistani army says it has launched a ground offensive against pro-Taliban militants in South Waziristan, after weeks of air and artillery strikes on militants' positions.
According to military sources, around 28,000 troops backed by fighter jets and tanks entered volatile South Waziristan from three directions on Saturday.
Three divisions of the military, paramilitary and police will be involved in the ground operation, and up to 60,000 troops are expected to take part in the two-month-long offensive.
Pakistani fighter jets and helicopter gunships have pounded militant sites in the region for months in a bid to "soften up" the targets ahead of a ground offensive.
